Healthy Sleep Tips For Children

Keeping your child to a regular bedtime routine can be difficult, but it can help improve the quality of their sleep.

For some children, irregular sleeping hours can be problematic. Setting a regular bedtime schedule can really help children get the right amount of sleep.

It’s important to devise a routine that works for you and your child and to stick to it.

“Keep regular sleeping hours,” says Jessica Alexander of The Sleep Council, a non-profit organisation that provides advice on good sleep. Follow these sleep tips for children to bring it to the next level.

“A bedtime ritual teaches the brain to become familiar with sleep times and wake times,” she says. “It programmes the brain and internal body clock to get used to a set routine.”


Relaxation techniques to aid sleep

Winding down is a critical stage in preparing your child for bed. There are many ways for them to relax:

  • A warm (not hot) bath will help their body reach a temperature where it’s most likely to rest.
  • Relaxation exercises, such as light yoga stretches, will help relax their muscles.
  • Relaxation CDs work by relaxing the listener with carefully chosen words and gentle hypnotic music and sound effects.
  • Reading a book or listening to the radio will relax their mind by distracting it from any worries or anxieties.


Avoid TVs in the bedroom

The bedroom should be a relaxed environment.

Experts say that bedrooms are strongly associated with sleep, but that certain things weaken the association. These include TVs, mobiles/smartphones and other electronic gadgets, light or noise, and a bad mattress or uncomfortable bed.

Try to keep your child’s bedroom a TV-free zone and get them to charge their phones and other devices downstairs. That way they’ll be out of temptation and won’t disturb them if a text or email comes through.

Get a comfy bed

“It’s important to create an environment that’s favourable for sleep,” says Alexander. “Keep the bedroom just for sleeping.”

The bedroom needs to be dark, quiet and tidy. It should smell fresh and be kept at a temperature of 18-24°C. Jessica adds: “Fit some thick curtains. If there’s noise outside, consider investing in double glazing or, for a cheaper option, earplugs.”

A comfortable bed is essential. Research by The Sleep Council shows that a good-quality mattress and bed frame will give you an extra hour’s sleep a night.

Dr Chris Izikowski of the Edinburgh Sleep Centre, who led the research, says people benefit from changing their bed if it’s uncomfortable. “It’s likely that long-term insomniacs and those with inadequate sleep habits would benefit most,” he says.


Keep a sleep diary

One of the first things your GP or sleep expert will get you to do is to keep a sleep diary for your child as part of diagnosing any sleep problems.

“The sleep diary might reveal some underlying conditions that explain sleep problems, such as stress or medication,” says Alexander.

A sleep diary might reveal lifestyle habits or experiences in your child’s day-to-day activities that contribute to sleep problems.

A sleep diary could include answers to the following questions:

  • What were your child’s sleeping times?
  • How long did it take them to get to sleep?
  • How many times did they wake up during the night?
  • How long did each awakening last?
  • How long did they sleep in total?
  • Did they do any exercise shortly before going to bed?
  • Did they take any naps during the day or evening?
  • Has anything made them anxious or upset?

Father’s Diet Before Conception Plays Crucial Role in Offspring’s Health, Study Suggests

Dec. 14, 2013 — Mothers get all the attention. But a study led by McGill researcher Sarah Kimmins suggests that the father’s diet before conception may play an equally important role in the health of their offspring. It also raises concerns about the long-term effects of current Western diets and of food insecurity.

The research focused on vitamin B9, also called folate, which is found in a range of green leafy vegetables, cereals, fruit and meats. It is well known that in order to prevent miscarriages and birth defects mothers need to get adequate amounts of folate in their diet. But the way that a father’s diet can influence the health and development of their offspring has received almost no attention. Now research from the Kimmins group shows for the first time that the father’s folate levels may be just as important to the development and health of their offspring as are those of the mother. Indeed, the study suggests that fathers should pay as much attention to their lifestyle and diet before they set out to conceive a child as mothers do.

“Despite the fact that folic acid is now added to a variety of foods, fathers who are eating high-fat, fast food diets or who are obese may not be able to use or metabolize folate in the same way as those with adequate levels of the vitamin,” says Kimmins. “People who live in the Canadian North or in other parts of the world where there is food insecurity may also be particularly at risk for folate deficiency. And we now know that this information will be passed on from the father to the embryo with consequences that may be quite serious.”

The researchers arrived at this conclusion by working with mice, and comparing the offspring of fathers with insufficient folate in their diets with the offspring of fathers whose diets contained sufficient levels of the vitamin. They found that paternal folate deficiency was associated with an increase in birth defects of various kinds in the offspring, compared to the offspring of mice whose fathers were fed a diet with sufficient folate.

“We were very surprised to see that there was an almost 30 per cent increase in birth defects in the litters sired by fathers whose levels of folates were insufficient,” said Dr. Romain Lambrot, of McGill’s Dept. of Animal Science, one of the researchers who worked on the study. “We saw some pretty severe skeletal abnormalities that included both cranio-facial and spinal deformities.”

The research from the Kimmins’ group shows that there are regions of the sperm epigenome that are sensitive to life experience and particularly to diet. And that this information is in turn transferred to a so-called epigenomic map that influences development and may also influence metabolism and disease in the offspring in the long-term. (The epigenome is like a switch, which is affected by environmental cues, and is involved in many diseases including cancer and diabetes. The epigenome influences the way that genes are turned on or off, and hence how heritable information gets passed along).

Although it has been known for some time that there is a massive erasure and re-establishment that takes place in the epigenome as the sperm develops, this study now shows that along with the developmental map, the sperm also carries a memory of the father’s environment and possibly even of his diet and lifestyle choices.

“Our research suggests that fathers need to think about what they put in their mouths, what they smoke and what they drink and remember they are caretakers of generations to come,” said Kimmins. “If all goes as we hope, our next step will be to work with collaborators at a fertility clinic so that we can start assessing the links in men between diet, being overweight and how this information relates to the health of their children.

  • Obesity is a life-threatening disease affecting more than one-third of all adults in the U.S.
  • Weight classifications for adults: 
    • Super obese: A person with a BMI of 50 or more
      • 50,000 adults are super obese in the U.S.
    • Morbidly obese: A person with a BMI of 40 or more, or a BMI of 35 or more with an obesity related disease, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease or sleep apnea
      • 15 million adults are morbidly obese in the U.S.
    • Obese: A person with a BMI of 30 – 39.9
      • 64 million adults are obese in the U.S.

In recent years, studies have shown clinically severe or morbid obesity (body mass index (BMI) >40 or 50 kg m(-2)) entails far more serious health consequences than moderate obesity for patients, and creates additional challenges for providers.

“Preventing obesity during childhood is critical, because habits formed during youth frequently carry into adulthood; an obese 4-year-old has a 20% chance of becoming obese as an adult, and an obese teenager has up to an 80% chance of becoming an obese adult. If this epidemic is not reversed, we are in danger of raising the first generation of American children who will live sicker and die younger than the generations before them.”-Samir Becic

• Overweight and obesity are associated with a 52% and 60% increased risk, respectively, for new diagnoses of asthma among children and adolescents.

• Obese children are at a higher risk for psychosocial problems, fatty liver, orthopedic-related problems and sleep apnea.

• Although traditionally viewed as an “adult” illness, the rise in childhood overweight and obesity has corresponded to an increasing proportion of youths with type 2 diabetes, particularly among adolescent minority populations. The youngest child to be diagnosed with Diabetes Type 2, was a 3 year old girl, whose diagnosis was reversed once she adopted a healthy lifestyle and lost weight.

• Obese children and teens have been found to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD), including high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and abnormal glucose tolerance. 11 In a population-based sample of 5- to 17-year-olds, 7% of obese children had at least one CVD risk factor while 39% had two or more CVD risk factors.

“We need to fight morbid and super obesity with all the power we have! Families with morbid and super obese children should be put in special fitness programs in order to understand the negative impact of obesity on health. In the worse case scenarios, when children are in an environment where it is not possible for them to get healthy, I would take them away from their parents until circumstances change. These children should be placed in special wellness programs in order to save their lives” Samir Becic says.

Childhood obesity alone is estimated to cost $14 billion annually in direct health expenses, and children covered by Medicaid are nearly six times more likely to be treated for a diagnosis of obesity than children covered by private insurance.

You may have heard recently in the news about the mosquito-borne virus that is rapidly spreading around the world. At this time, the Center For Disease Control is working on tests in the laboratory to collect more research on transmission, prevention, and recognizing the link between Zika and other associated disabilities. Keep reading below to find out how to prevent infection, what areas to avoid while traveling this summer, and what the symptoms are if you are already infected!

  • Which Areas Are Being Affected? Puerto Rico, Brazil, and Colombia have many confirmed cases of this vector-borne virus and it is continuing to spread rapidly in similar climates. The most recent exposed areas in the United States that have been affected are California, Florida, New York, and Texas. The two species of mosquitos that carry the Zika virus, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, are both known to breed within tropical, subtropical, temperate climates, and some can even survive in cooler temperaturesBut most of these cases are from those who have recently traveled to areas that are affected with this mosquito-born virus.
  • How To Prevent Bites: We recommend wearing long sleeves and pants as much as you can when you are spending time outside. Another great tip to stay far away from these noxious mosquitos is to remain in air-conditioned buildings with screened doors and windows to keep them out! Also, be sure to reapply your insect repellent throughout the day as per the instructions (preferably one containing DEET), empty containers that hold water to kill mosquito larvae, use condoms when having sex, and also make sure to sleep under a mosquito net.
  • Advisory For Pregnant Women: If women contract the virus while pregnant they may also pass the virus along to their unborn baby. This vector-born virus was initially discovered in 1947 in the Zika Forest of Uganda. However, the first human to be infected by this virus was not until 1952. Since this time there was been a widespread infection of this virus all over the world. Notably within tropical Africa, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and Brazil.
  • How Is It Transmitted? The Zika virus can be contracted by being bitten by the mosquito species names Aedes, blood transfusions, laboratory exposures, as well as having sexual intercourse with someone who is infected. It is a flavivirus very similar in onset to West Nile, yellow fever, the dengue virus, and other viruses of this genus (Zika Virus).
  • What Are The Symptoms? Once infected by this virus, it may take several days to a week to notice changes in your health. You may experience symptoms such as rash, painful joints, fever, red eyes, and some may even suffer headaches and muscle aches. Symptoms differ from patient to patient, and some people may not even show symptoms at all. The virus can remain in your blood for a week and in some cases; symptoms have lasted longer, but with such mild indications it may be difficult to tell if you have even been infected.Though there have been very few cases resulting in death after contracting this virus, you should still err on the side of caution when exploring the beautiful outdoors this summer.
  • Can You Be Infected More Than Once? There is some good news for those who are already infected: if you have already contracted the virus and have been treated properly you will be shielded from any potential Zika virus infections thereafter.
  • So How Else Can You Get It? If an infected male has had sexual intercourse with a woman, it is possible for him to not only transmit this virus to the woman, but also to her unborn baby. The result of an infant being born with this virus is threatening, since along with the virus, the newborn baby is also at risk for being born with an extremely debilitating brain deficiency called microcephaly. According to the CDC, “Microcephaly is a birth defect where a baby’s head is smaller than expected when compared to babies of the same sex and age. Babies with microcephaly often have smaller brains that might not have developed properly”.
  • What Happens If You Are Pregnant And Infected? The CDC is not sure quite of the exact likelihood that pregnant women will birth a child with microcephaly at this point in time. However, the link between infected pregnant women and their babies that are born with the Zika virus present within brain tissue and microcephaly is definitive. There is now much more research solidifying this connection, as well as other birth defects that are associated with this microcephaly such as eye impairments, loss of hearing, and issues with growth and development.
  • What About If You’re Infected & Want To Have A Baby? If you are not already pregnant, being infected with this virus will not affect future pregnancies as long as the infection is treated and removed from the blood properly. And if you are wondering if there has been a vaccination developed yet, it is still in the works, but the hopes of a vaccine shouldn’t stop you from protecting yourself in the meantime!
  • What To Do If You Think You May Be Infected: The protocol if you are infected with this virus is to visit to a general practitioner as soon as possible to rule out any other vector-born viruses such as dengue, make sure you get ample amount of rest, take a fever-reducer such as acetaminophen, stay hydrated, and practice safe sex to prevent further spreading. It is probably best not to take any anti-inflammatories, as you could react negatively and induce internal bleeding if you have contracted a virus other than Zika. The physician will do a series of blood and urine tests to determine whether or not you have the virus, and check to make sure you do not have any others.
